🧾 Crypto Tax Calculator — User Guide

This guide explains how to enter transactions, import a CSV, understand warnings and export an estimate from the Crypto Tax Calculator for India.

What the tool calculates

The calculator estimates:

One VDA transfer loss is not set off against income from another transfer. Surcharge, marginal relief, slab-rate income and taxpayer-specific adjustments are not included.

Before entering transactions

Collect complete acquisition and disposal records, including:

Use consistent asset names. For example, use BTC for every Bitcoin transaction rather than mixing BTC and Bitcoin.

Manual entry

  1. Open the Manual Entry tab.
  2. Select the transaction type.
  3. Enter the asset, quantity, INR price per unit and date.
  4. Enter fees shown in your records.
  5. For a trade, enter the received asset, total INR trade value and quantity received.
  6. For a sale or trade, mark whether VDA-transfer TDS was already deducted.
  7. Select Add Transaction.

Fees are retained with the transaction record for reference but are not deducted by the calculator when it estimates VDA transfer income.

CSV import

CSV import replaces the transactions currently saved in the calculator. Export or otherwise preserve any existing records before importing another file.

The header is:

type,asset,quantity,price_per_unit,date,fees,traded_asset,traded_value,received_quantity,tds_deducted

Example:

type,asset,quantity,price_per_unit,date,fees,traded_asset,traded_value,received_quantity,tds_deducted
buy,BTC,1,100000,2024-03-31,0,,,,
sell,BTC,0.5,140000,2024-04-01,0,,,,false

Calculating and reviewing results

Before calculating, select the TDS annual-threshold assumption:

The category describes the payer for purposes of the estimate. The calculator assumes one payer across the transfers in a year. Exchange and P2P transactions can require separate payer-by-payer review.

Select Calculate Tax, then review every year shown.

Transfer breakdown

For each disposal, the report shows:

Incomplete acquisition warning

If a sale or trade does not have enough earlier acquisition records, its cost basis and income are marked Incomplete or Not calculated. That transfer is excluded from estimated taxable income.

Add the missing earlier purchase or acquisition record and calculate again. Never treat an incomplete report as a filing-ready result.

Losses

Losses remain visible in the transfer breakdown but are not used to reduce positive income from another VDA transfer.

Crypto-to-crypto trades

A trade is treated as:

  1. A disposal of the asset given up, using the entered INR trade value as consideration.
  2. An acquisition lot for the asset received, using the same INR value.

Confirm that the INR trade value and received quantity match your exchange or wallet records.

Mining, staking and gifts

The calculator displays entered mining, staking and gift values for separate review only. It does not:

Consult a qualified tax professional for these transactions.

TDS estimate

The indicative 1% TDS calculation:

The result is not a substitute for Form 26AS, AIS, exchange statements or payer-specific records.

Exporting results

Incomplete transfers are not exported as completed tax calculations. Resolve all warnings before using a report.

Privacy and saved data

Transactions are stored in browser local storage and calculations run in the browser. CryptooChai does not receive the transaction data through a calculator backend.

Remember:

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official Income Tax Department calculator?

No. It is an independent informational tool maintained by CryptooChai.

Is FIFO required by law?

The calculator uses FIFO as an estimation assumption. The tool does not claim that FIFO is a universal statutory mandate. Verify the appropriate identification method and records with a tax professional.

Why is a sale marked incomplete?

The calculator could not find enough earlier acquisition quantity for that asset. Check for missing buys, received trades, transfers between wallets, rewards or gifts.

Does “TDS already deducted” reduce the estimated VDA income tax?

It is displayed separately as a TDS record. Confirm the credit against official tax statements and obtain professional advice about final tax payable.

Can I use the calculator on mobile?

Yes, but a desktop browser is usually easier for reviewing large transaction tables and CSV files.

Current law references

For years beginning before 1 April 2026, the relevant references are Sections 115BBH and 194S of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

From Tax Year 2026–27, the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies. Section 194 contains the 30% VDA-income rule, and Section 393(1), Table 8(vi), covers 1% VDA-transfer TDS. The earlier Act continues to govern earlier years.
